Winter’s Threshold: Craft, Discipline, and the Work to Come

Things have been exceedingly busy this month, including the myriad demands of Christmas that don’t let up until well after the eggnog has run dry and the wastebins are bulging with wrapping paper.

On top of the holiday chaos, I’m now three months into a new role in my full‑time career as a materials scientist. This double life of scientist and indie creator has me commiserating with the Batmans / Bruce Waynes of the world—yet somehow, over this past year, I’ve landed on a surprisingly solid balance between the two.

My output this month was solid, and for the most part, I’ve stayed on schedule and properly disciplined.

Here’s the rundown.

Greycross

Two new chapters of my serialized novel Greycross: Twilight at Primrose, have been published to the sanctum.

We return to Helena as the focuser, who innocently takes on her duties at Falgrave Manor, yet inadvertently reveals deeper and deeper strata of mysteries to the reader.

The previous chapters saw John Greycross’s encounters with key witnesses surrounding the Primrose horror, including an interview with the snarky old Muldons, a deep dive into the mind of the maimed and catatonic governess Mary Albans, and finally a series of dark revelations with Dr. Colin Sinclair—who knows far more about Greycross’s occult world than he should.

If you’re a fan of slow-burn Gothic Fiction, Occult Detective, or Gaslamp Fantasy, you may really enjoy Greycross.

Sanctums of Sound

A new Sanctums of Sound entry has been consecrated on YouTube.

“Advent” is a dark ambient soundscape—a perfect companion for wandering a post‑apocalyptic landscape where ash falls like snow and memories wane like the light of a veiled sun.

If you’re not a nomadic warrior traversing a shattered hellscape, you can just put “Advent” and other Sanctums of Sound pieces on while you write, study, create, dream, or reflect.

Physical Culture

I’ve made tending to my earthly vessel non‑negotiable. Over the past three months, I’ve locked into a genuinely amazing workout rhythm—the most consistent and sustainable I’ve had in years.

Between 2022 and 2024, I drifted into a long hiatus from this platform and from creating in general. I was working a miserable job with an even more miserable commute, gaining weight, feeling depressed every day, and carrying the emotional weight of being a caregiver for my terminally ill mother‑in‑law.

That bleak stretch took its toll. My energy cratered, my bloodwork raised some eyebrows, and every day felt like a slow war of attrition.

But I’ve been clawing my way out of that slouch with the tools that have always served me best—kettlebells, sandbags, calisthenics, conditioning, and martial arts. The old reliables.

I even built a Python script that generates personalized workouts for me, pulling from all my key training categories: Warm‑ups, Agility, Conditioning, Strength, and Martial Arts. It’s loaded with everything I’ve learned over decades of experimenting and refining, bushwhacking my way through the tangled wilds of fitness misinformation and the endless parade of chemically enhanced “gurus.”

I’m as serious as a heart attack. Because, let’s be honest—a dead man can’t write these lovely books or compose this groovy music.

On the Horizon

The coming months will bring more riveting chapters of Greycross and new Sanctums of Sound pieces. I have no intention of letting off the gas—and, God willing, no catastrophe will rise up to derail me.

Alongside Sanctums of Sound, I’ll be breaking ground on a parallel YouTube channel: Liam Keith – Myths and Musings. A creator needs some kind of social presence, and since I absolutely loathe Facebook and all its little demon‑spawn offshoots like Instagram, I’m choosing to invest in something more archival, alive, and less engineered for rage‑bait and dopamine spikes.

Myths and Musings will feature readings of Greycross chapters and other stories, along with philosophical ramblings on writing and creative practice (while doing my best not to be unbearably awkward). My goal is simply to share the journey—not to posture as yet another dime‑a‑dozen guru. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Looking ahead, I’m grateful for the chance to keep creating. There’s even a strong forecast for finally finishing a few of the short stories I’ve had lying around. I’ll also be carving out time for frosty hikes in the North Georgia mountains and a few other adventures, all while juggling my alter ego as a mild‑mannered corporate scientist.

That’s all for now—I’ve got some last‑minute Christmas shopping and gift‑wrapping to pull off.

Wishing you a merry season, and a new year filled with good cheer.
